Because corner frequency is noting but the inverse of time constant, and inverse of time constant is pole of the system. So, directly we can say pole of the system is called corner frequency of system. So put 1+0.5jw = 0 and jw = 2 or s = jw, so 1+0.5s = 0, so s = 2.
