In reverse biasd, both the Zener and the Avalanche effects are present simultaneously. Although, one dominates over the other depending upon the value of the reverse voltage.
Generally, for reverse voltage, Vr < 6 V , zener effect dominates while for Vr > 6 V , avalanche effect dominates.
