Diode is not failure it is switch so use open and close condition.

Even after break down if a diode is operated then its open circuited not short circuited. Try checking by connecting an LED in series with diode and resistor and find whether it shorts are opens. If the reverse voltage applied is more than the rated voltage then diode opens.

Then what is the final conclusion? Please explain.

Diode works OK in fwd bias but when subjected to reverse bias it remains almost an open for current except reverse leakage current but further increase in reverse voltage beyond breakdown point will destroy diode and it will act as an open in circuit.

But @Sudha maximum time fails as a short in reverse direction.

Depends whether you are applying a reverse voltage or not. If the diode is back-biased, the leakage currents doubles every 10C as you raise the temperature, and eventually the current reaches a level where the heat dissipation within the junction is high enough for the junction
temperature to run away.

The diode then fails as a short circuit.

A diode is like a switch which have 2 states: ON or OFF.
Diode works good during forward bias(ON state) because we recieves a large amount of current. But during reverse bias(OFF state) we recieves a small amount of leakage current which is not required during OFF state.
Hence, most common type of diode failure is a open.

@Ramya
But how it will be a failure
because increase in the current in reverse means the decrease in the flow of current is occuring.

Only diode failure occurs when it is reverse biased. Hence when you increase reverse voltage after particular breakdown voltage there is increase in current which means charges continuously flow rather than voltage.

What is diode failure?
