An intrinsic semiconductor material is a poor conductor. When a small amount of pentavalent impurity is added to the intrinsic material its conductivity rises sharply. This material formed after the addition of pentavalent impurity to the intrinsic semiconductor material is called N-type material. Addition of small amount of pentavalent atoms in the intrinsic material provides large number of free electrons for conduction.

N type semiconductor is a lower conductor. When a pentavalent impurity add in n type semiconductor than it generate a free electron. So it is use for conduct.

Intrinsic semiconductors are pure semiconductors. The process of adding impurity to the pure form of semiconductor is called doping and the semiconductor thus obtained is called extrinsic semiconductors. Pentavalent impurity produce n- type and trivalent produce p- type semiconductors.
