The formula there is wrong this is the right formula,
Id = Idss(1-Vgs/Vp)^2.
Id/Idss = (1-0.5Vp/Vp)^2.
Id = Idss(1-Vgs/Vp)^2.
Id/Idss = (1-0.5Vp/Vp)^2.

It is based on Shockley's Equation.

In JFET we know
Drain current Id = Idss(1-Vgs/Vp)2
then from the given data
Vgs = 0.5Vp
Id/Idss = (1-0.5Vp/Vp)2
= 0.25
Drain current Id = Idss(1-Vgs/Vp)2
then from the given data
Vgs = 0.5Vp
Id/Idss = (1-0.5Vp/Vp)2
= 0.25
