What is PIV rating?

The peak inverse rating (PIV). It is a primary importance in the design of rectification systems. I think in my view it is the voltage rating that must not be exceeded in the reverse bias region. PIV rating of the diode must equal or exceed the peak value of the apply voltage. Either in half wave rectifier or full wave.

The peak inverse voltage is either the specified maximum voltage that a diode rectifier can block, or, alternatively, the maximum that a rectifier needs to block in a given application.

The primary characteristic of N14001 rectifier diode shows.
Vrrm (PIV) is 50-1000v if you look at the datasheet of this component.

Typical PIV value for diode whose specifications are not given is always taken as 50 v.
