The 1st digit specifies the number of Junction present, exampe you can easily say that 1N4001 devices is a Diode, because it only has 1 Junction.

2N4002 for example, means that the device has 2 Junctiona, so you can say it is a transistor.

Generally it is hard to find the type of transistor from number, You can get datasheet from google through this number. From that datasheet you can get all the specification.
