Yes transformer works only on AC supply.This is because when DC supply is applied across its primary then it draws steady current nd causes constent flux which leads to core saturation nd burns out bacause of low resistance.transformer could be made working on DC if we connect high resistance in series with its primary.

We know that the Inductive Reactance (XL) is zero on dc. Since frequency is zero.
In case of connecting transformer's coil to a dc supply a short-circuit will take place immediately and a heavy current will pass capable to burn and damage the coil (in this case the coil resistance is negligible or almost zero).

Transformer has high inductance and low resistance so when dc supply is given inductance is zero and only resistance is present, due to low resistance a heavy current flows and may damage th insulation.

A transformer infact never responds to DC. For the transformer action it always demands Ac. Hence, the provision to step-up or down makes AC lines advantageous over corresponding DC.

When dc supply is given to transformer the inductor act as a short circit, then heavy currents is passed in the inductor, therefore the winding damaged.

Transformer works on principle of mutual induction so it responds for ac and if dc applied winding will burn.

DC current flow,
Than after,
Induction=0.
&
Resistance = HIGH.
Than after,
secondary winding is BURN.

Because in the dc thers is no frequency change but in ac there will be a frequency change so we can use ac.

Because has no frequency so it will not go to mutual induction.

Beacause dc burns its winding out.
