A transformer works on ac only.
It transforms power.

By using transformer we can step-up/step-down ac voltages only.

Works on the principle of mutual induction which is possible in ac due to alternating in nature.

Transformer is responsible for to make voltage step up or step down without change in frequency. Step up-step down depends on turns of transformer coil.

Transformer responsible for step up/down of A.C power only. If the transformer use for D.C power then due to constant flow of D.C current its winding gets burned.

Why transformer not works in the dc supply ?

How converts 2ph to 3ph supply with transformer ?

To step DC up or down you need something like a buck or boost converter. AC electricity is one reason we're able to have our power grid so wide spread. Because we can step up and down AC electricity from the supplier to the home.

Transformer not works in the dc supply because there is no flux change in the dc so the induced emf in the secondary of transformer is zero.

Because a transformer works on the principle of mutual induction and it requires only alternating flux linkages hence the dc supply does not consists of frequency to offer flux linkages. So if we apply dc supply it will result in burning of primary winding.
