Function generator is used to generate different waveform like sine, square&triangular wave. Using generator and clock pulse in gates to produce the different types of waveform. I think it's reason.

Basic gate =clock=watch
watch=0
0+1=1
1=oscillator
So oscilator = wave form generator.
watch=0
