SMT - Surface mounting technology.
Example.
10k ohm through hole Resistor requires around.
2cm space but 10k ohm chip with different packages available 01005-1206 package if we take 01005 packages it required only 2-3mm.

In SMT, the components are lead-less and are directly mounted to the board surface. In Through Hole the components have lead wires that are taken to the wiring boards via holes.
