Multiplexer is a combinational circuit that selects binary information from one of many input lines and directs it to a single output line. Let us consider example 4:1 mux, it is having 4 inputs and 2 selection lines and 1 output.

Multiplexes means many to one. It it is a combinational circuit it has n input lines and m selection lines and output line such that n=2 power m. It steers one of the input at the output.

Multiplexer it works 2^n inputs and n outputs for demultiplexer n inputs 2^n outputs.
