Directions to Solve
The following table gives the percentage distribution of population of five states, P, Q, R, S and T on the basis of poverty line and also on the basis of sex.
State | Percentage of Population below the Poverty Line | Proportion of Males and Females
Below Poverty Line | Above Poverty Line
M : F | M : F | ||
P | 35 | 5 : 6 | 6 : 7 |
Q | 25 | 3 : 5 | 4 : 5 |
R | 24 | 1 : 2 | 2 : 3 |
S | 19 | 3 : 2 | 4 : 3 |
T | 15 | 5 : 3 | 3 : 2 |
4.
If the population of males below poverty line for State Q is 2.4 million and that for State T is 6 million, then the total populations of States Q and T are in the ratio?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
For State Q:
Male population below poverty line = 2.4 million.
Let the female population below poverty line be x million.
Then, 3 : 5 = 2.4 : x ![]() |
5 x 2.4 | = 4. |
3 |
Total population below poverty line = (2.4 + 4) = 6.4 million.
If Nq be the total population of State Q, then,
25% of Nq = 6.4 million ![]() |
![]() |
6.4 x 100 | ![]() |
million = 25.6 million. |
25 |
For State T:
Male population below poverty line = 6 million.
Let the female population below poverty line be y million.
Then, 5 : 3 = 6 : y ![]() |
3 x 6 | = 3.6. |
5 |
Total population below poverty line = (6 + 3.6) = 9.6 million.
If Nt be the total population of State T, then,
15% of Nt = 9.6 million ![]() |
![]() |
9.6 x 100 | ![]() |
million = 64 million. |
15 |
Thus, Required ratio = | Nq | = | 25.6 | = 0.4 = | 2 | . |
Nt | 64 | 5 |

Here, we have to calculate the population above the poverty line and then add the population below and above the poverty line. So, Total population = (total population of the above poverty line) + (total population of below poverty line).

x/y = 24 * 5 * 15/(60 * 3 * 25) = 2/5.

Q: 3/8*25%*x = 2.4.
x = 2.4*8*100/3*25.
T: 5/8*15/100*y = 6.
y = 6*8*100/5*15.
x:y = 2:5.
(common terms can be easily cancelled).
x = 2.4*8*100/3*25.
T: 5/8*15/100*y = 6.
y = 6*8*100/5*15.
x:y = 2:5.
(common terms can be easily cancelled).

Q=X; T=Y;
25%*X*3/8 = 2.4;
X = 25.6;
15%*Y*5/8 = 6;
Y = 64;
Therefore x:y = 25.6:6.00; 2:5.
25%*X*3/8 = 2.4;
X = 25.6;
15%*Y*5/8 = 6;
Y = 64;
Therefore x:y = 25.6:6.00; 2:5.

Males below poverty line in state Q = (25*3/8)x1 = 2.4(given) --- Equation 1.
Males below poverty line in state T = (15*5/8)x2 = 6 (given) --- Equation 2.
Equation 1 / equation 2 = x1/x2 = 24/60 = 2/5.
Males below poverty line in state T = (15*5/8)x2 = 6 (given) --- Equation 2.
Equation 1 / equation 2 = x1/x2 = 24/60 = 2/5.

For Q,
25%*3/8 = 2.4
100% = 2.4*(8/3)* (100/25)
= 25.6
For T,
15%*5/8 = 6
100% = 6 *(8/5)* (100/15)
= 64
Q:T= 25.6/64 = 0.4 = 4/10 = 2/5
25%*3/8 = 2.4
100% = 2.4*(8/3)* (100/25)
= 25.6
For T,
15%*5/8 = 6
100% = 6 *(8/5)* (100/15)
= 64
Q:T= 25.6/64 = 0.4 = 4/10 = 2/5
