Directions to Solve

The following table gives the percentage distribution of population of five states, P, Q, R, S and T on the basis of poverty line and also on the basis of sex.

State Percentage of Population below the Poverty Line Proportion of Males and Females
Below Poverty Line Above Poverty Line
M : F M : F
P355 : 66 : 7
Q253 : 54 : 5
R241 : 22 : 3
S193 : 24 : 3
T155 : 33 : 2

3.
What will be the male population above poverty line for State P if the female population below poverty line for State P is 2.1 million?
2.1 million
2.3 million
2.7 million
3.3 million
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Female population below poverty line for State P = 2.1 million

Let the male population below poverty line for State P be x million.

Then, 5 : 6 = x : 21     =>     x = 2.1 x 5 = 1.75.
6

Therefore Population below poverty line for State P = (2.1 + 1.75) million = 3.85 million.

Let the population above poverty line for State P by y million.

Since, 35% of the total population of State P is below poverty line, therefore, 65% of the total population of State P is above poverty line i.e., the ratio of population below poverty line to that above poverty line for State P is 35 : 65.

Therefore 35 : 65 = 3.85 : y     =>     y = 65 x 3.85 = 7.15.
35

Therefore Population above poverty line for State P = 7.15 million and so, male population above poverty line for State P

    = ( 6 x 7.15 ) million
13

    = 3.3 million.

From the question,

Female population below the poverty line for State P = 2.1 million.
By using this data let's find the total population of the state P.

From the Table, in-state P.

Percentage of Population Below the Poverty Line = 35% (35/100).
Below Poverty Line Male: Female ratio = 5: 6,
The female Ratio will be 6/11 (Female ratio/total),
Let the total population of the state P be 'x',

Now,
x* 35/100 * 6/11 = 2.1 (Female population below the poverty line for State P).
After solving this,,
you will get x=11.

So, the total population of the State P = 11 million.
To find the male population above the poverty line for State P,

We know that,
Percentage of Population Below the Poverty Line = 35% (35/100).
So, the Percentage of the Population above the Poverty Line will be 65%(65/100),
Above Poverty Line Male: Female ration= 6:7,
The male ratio will be 6/13 (Male ratio/total).

Now,
65/100 * 6/13 * 11 (the total population of the State P).
Solving this you will get 33/10 which is 3.3.

So, the male population above the poverty line for State P will be 3.3 million.

For female population below poverty line.
6/11*35/100*X= 2.1-->(given).
Therefore,
X= 11.
.
Now for male population above poverty line for state p.
6/13*65/100*X=6/13*65/100*11= 3.3million.
For below poverty line don't use [100-given%].

2.1 = 6/11*35/100*x.

x = 11.
x is total population.

65/100*11*6/13 = 3.3 million.

More easily it can be solved as follow:

As female below poverty line is 2.1 and its ratio is 6 thus total population in state p = (2.1/6)*11 = 3.58 million. This 3.58 million people are below poverty line.

So people above poverty line are = (3.58/35)*65 = 7.15million.

And thus male population above poverty line =(7.15/13) *6 = 3.3 million.

ATQ,
35%*6/11 = 2.1
35% = 2.1*11/6
1% = (2.1*11) / (6*35)
(100-35)%=65%= (2.1*11*65)/(6*35)=7.15 million

so, male popln above poverty level= 7.15 * 6/13 million
= 3.3 million
