Directions to Solve

The following table gives the percentage distribution of population of five states, P, Q, R, S and T on the basis of poverty line and also on the basis of sex.

State Percentage of Population below the Poverty Line Proportion of Males and Females
Below Poverty Line Above Poverty Line
M : F M : F
P355 : 66 : 7
Q253 : 54 : 5
R241 : 22 : 3
S193 : 24 : 3
T155 : 33 : 2

1.
If the male population above poverty line for State R is 1.9 million, then the total population of State R is?
4.5 million
4.85 million
5.35 million
6.25 million
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the total population of State R be x million.

Then, population of State R above poverty line

    = [(100 - 24)% of x] million

    = ( 76 x x ) million
100

And so, male population of State R above poverty line

    = [ 2 x ( 76 x x ) ] million
5 100

But, it is given that male population of State R above poverty line = 1.9 million.

Therefore 2 x ( 76 x x ) = 1.9     =>     x = 5 x 100 x 1.9 = 6.25.
5 100 76 x 2

Therefore Total population of State R = 6.25 million.

This is very long method can someone explain any short cut method?

Didn't clear this example. Can someone clear this example?

How is 76% taken? I cannot understand.

Let's M:F - 1:2 2:3.

1+2/2 = 3/2 = 2/3.

2+3/3 = 5/3 3/5.

Add 2/3*3/5 = 2/5 because 3/3 = 1.

@Deep.

How did you get the ratio of population below poverty line and above poverty line 24:76?

It is not yet clear, can anyone make it more clear?

We can do this example same as example no. 3:

Ratio between male & female for above poverty line is 2:3.

Lets assume female population above poverty line is x.

So, 2:3 = 1.9:x => x = 2.85 million.

Total population above poverty line = 1.9 + 2.85 = 4.75 million.

Now the ratio of Population below poverty line & above poverty line is 24:76.

Lets assume population of below poverty line is y.

So, 24:76 = y:4.75 => y = 1.50 million.

Total population of state R = 4.75 + 1.50 = 6.25 million.

Hi @Anand,

Yes, above poverty line for the state R is 2:3, in that 2 is males percentage, and 3 is females percentage and 5 (2+3) is the overall population including male and female. if you need to find the male population alone of State R then it would be 2/(2+3) = 2/5; similarly for female population 3/(2+3) = 3/5.

Hope this is clear.

Above Poverty Line R is 2:3

How it would be 2 / 5 ?

Please anyone can explain clearly ?

It can be done more easily:

(1.9/2) * 5 = 4.75

as 4.75 is 76%(100-24)% of total population, so total population is (4.75/76)*100 = 6.25 million
