Directions to Solve

The following table gives the percentage distribution of population of five states, P, Q, R, S and T on the basis of poverty line and also on the basis of sex.

State Percentage of Population below the Poverty Line Proportion of Males and Females
Below Poverty Line Above Poverty Line
M : F M : F
P355 : 66 : 7
Q253 : 54 : 5
R241 : 22 : 3
S193 : 24 : 3
T155 : 33 : 2

1.
If the male population above poverty line for State R is 1.9 million, then the total population of State R is?
4.5 million
4.85 million
5.35 million
6.25 million
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the total population of State R be x million.

Then, population of State R above poverty line

    = [(100 - 24)% of x] million

    = ( 76 x x ) million
100

And so, male population of State R above poverty line

    = [ 2 x ( 76 x x ) ] million
5 100

But, it is given that male population of State R above poverty line = 1.9 million.

Therefore 2 x ( 76 x x ) = 1.9     =>     x = 5 x 100 x 1.9 = 6.25.
5 100 76 x 2

Therefore Total population of State R = 6.25 million.

Here, above poverty line male =76/100*2/5 = 1.9 then how can we calculate total population by this equation putting x.

24 is below poverty percentage of state are. So remaining 100-24 i.e. 76 will be above poverty percentage.

@Deep.

How did you get the ratio of population below poverty line and above poverty line 24:76?

Reena said:   1 decade ago
Let's M:F - 1:2 2:3.

1+2/2 = 3/2 = 2/3.

2+3/3 = 5/3 3/5.

Add 2/3*3/5 = 2/5 because 3/3 = 1.

How we can get it in simple form?

Can anyone know the shortcut method to find the solution?

Above Poverty Line R is 2:3

How it would be 2 / 5 ?

Please anyone can explain clearly ?

2/5 is nothing but, male ratio divided by the total ratio of R above poverty line.

This is very long method can someone explain any short cut method?
