Directions to Solve
The following table gives the percentage distribution of population of five states, P, Q, R, S and T on the basis of poverty line and also on the basis of sex.

What will be the number of females above the poverty line in the State S if it is known that the population of State S is 7 million?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Total population of State S = 7 million.
Population above poverty line
= [(100 - 19)% of 7] million
= (81% of 7) million
= 5.67 million.
And so, the number of females above poverty line in State S

Simply,
For 100% population = 7 Million.
In this 100% they have given that, below the poverty line for S is 19%.
Therefore above poverty line percentage is (100% - 19%) which is 81%
Now, 100% --> 7
Then 81% --> X
X=(7*81)/ 100.
Therefore X = 5.6 (that is, 5.6 Million people are above the poverty line).
Substitute value of X in the ratio 4X:3X (because they have asked for number of female population below poverty)
4X+3X = 5.6
7X = 5.6
X = 0.8.
Now, for female population,
3X = 3(0.8) = 2.4 Million.
For 100% population = 7 Million.
In this 100% they have given that, below the poverty line for S is 19%.
Therefore above poverty line percentage is (100% - 19%) which is 81%
Now, 100% --> 7
Then 81% --> X
X=(7*81)/ 100.
Therefore X = 5.6 (that is, 5.6 Million people are above the poverty line).

Here 19 is % of population below the poverty line. So we just subtract (100 - 19) % to get above the poverty line.

Men to Women ratio is 4:3.That means if there are total 7 persons then 4 of them will be men and 3 of them will be women.
3/7 means how many women per person.So if you multiply total population with 3/7 then you get the number of women in the population.
