Directions to Solve

The following pie-chart shows the percentage distribution of the expenditure incurred in publishing a book. Study the pie-chart and the answer the questions based on it.

Various Expenditures (in percentage) Incurred in Publishing a Book

9.
Which two expenditures together have central angle of 108°?
Binding Cost and Transportation Cost
Printing Cost and Paper Cost
Royalty and Promotion Cost
Binding Cost and Paper Cost
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Central angle of 108° = ( 108 x 100 ) % of the total expenditure
360

= 30% of the total expenditure.

From the pie chart it is clear that:

Binding Cost + Transportation Cost = (20% + 10%) of the total expenditure
= 30% of the total expenditure.

Therefore Binding Cost and Transportation Cost together have a central angle of 108°.

Why aren't we taking promotion cost and binding cost? They also have 108°.

By adding the centre angle of binding cost+ transportation cost 72 + 36 = 108.

100% = 360,
1% = 3.6,
108/3.6 = 30%.

There is no option for binding+transportation.

Alternative method:

We know that to convert percentage => degree multiply by 18/5.

So binding =20% therefore 20*18/5 = 72.

And transportation = 10% therefore 10*18/5 = 36.

72 + 36 = 108.

Transportation cost and binding cost also yield the same result of 30%.
