Directions to Solve

The bar graph given below shows the sales of books (in thousand number) from six branches of a publishing company during two consecutive years 2000 and 2001.

Sales of Books (in thousand numbers) from Six Branches - B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 and B6 of a publishing Company in 2000 and 2001.

3.
What percent of the average sales of branches B1, B2 and B3 in 2001 is the average sales of branches B1, B3 and B6 in 2000?
75%
77.5%
82.5%
87.5%
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Average sales (in thousand number) of branches B1, B3 and B6 in 2000

    = 1 x (80 + 95 + 70) = ( 245 ) .
3 3

Average sales (in thousand number) of branches B1, B2 and B3 in 2001

    = 1 x (105 + 65 + 110) = ( 280 ) .
3 3

Therefore Required percentage = [ 245/3 x 100 ] % = ( 245 x 100 ) % = 87.5%.
280/3 280

Question is Avg of 2001 % of Avg 2000 %. The answer however is other way round.

avg of 2001 (93.3) of avg of 2000 ( 81.6)
which would be 113.97

Can any one tell me the short cut to solve these kind of problems, where big numbers are involved in division like the one above, 245/280= 0.875.

In the question the part which asks "what percentage of", should always be considered as the denominator substitution.

Ie. What percent of part: average sales of B1, B2, B3.

Numberator: Average sales of B1, B3, B6 = 245/3 = 81. 67.

Denominator:Average sales of B1, B2, B3 = 280/3 = 93. 33.

So, numerator/denominator = (81. 67/93. 33) *100% = 0. 88*100%= 87. 5%.
Answer is D.
