The Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) in India, in collaboration with IIT-BHU, launched the Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023 in October 2023. The hackathon aims to develop innovative solutions to detect and prevent dark patterns in e-commerce platforms. Dark patterns are deceptive user interface design choices that trick users into taking actions that they may not intend to take. For example, a dark pattern might be a pre-checked checkbox that opts users into a paid subscription service, or a button that is disguised as a "close" button but redirects users to a different page.
