Lionel Messi created history by becoming the first footballer to start three FIFA World Cup finals. He achieved this milestone during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. His previous final appearances came in 2014, when Argentina finished runners-up to Germany, and in 2022, when he captained Argentina to the World Cup title against France. At 39 years of age, Messi also became the oldest outfield player to appear in three World Cup finals. Although Argentina lost the 2026 final 1–0 after extra time, Messi delivered an outstanding tournament, finishing with eight goals and four assists while once again demonstrating exceptional leadership and consistency.
