E100 is a high-ethanol-content fuel that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has permitted for use in vehicles specifically designed and certified for it under the amended Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 2026. The amendments were notified through G.S.R. 911(E) dated October 23, 2026, and published on October 26, 2026. E100 is nominally composed of 100% ethanol, although its actual composition depends on applicable fuel specifications. Ethanol can be produced from agricultural sources such as sugarcane and maize. Its use aims to diversify India’s transport energy sources, promote biofuels and reduce dependence on imported crude oil. E100 must not be used in ordinary petrol vehicles unless they are appropriately designed and certified.
