India ranked 100th among 122 countries in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2026, recording a score of 24.1, which places the country in the serious hunger category. The report was published by Welthungerhilfe, the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict at Ruhr University Bochum, and Helvetas under the theme “No Security Without Food Security.” India's child stunting rate was reported at 29.3%, while child wasting affected nearly 19% of children under five, among the highest rates worldwide. Although child stunting has declined significantly since 2000, persistent malnutrition remains a major concern.
