The mail gateway is a machine that handles connections between networks that run different communications protocols or communications between different networks that use the same protocol. For example, a mail gateway might connect a TCP/IP network to a network that runs the Systems Network Architecture (SNA) protocol suite.

Mail gateway is a machine that connects 2 or more email systems& transfers messages between them. Sometimes the mapping & translation can be quite complex, & it generally requires a store n forward scheme whereby the msg is received from one system completely before it is transmitted to the next system, after suitable translations.
