EIA-232 standard or RS 232 (recommended standard-232) , a standard interface approved by the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) for connecting serial devices. Most personal computers have this port for connecting a modem or other devices.
In addition to modems, many display screens, mice, and serial printers are designed to connect to a EIA-232 port.
EIA-232 standard supports two types of connectors, 1. A 25-pin D-type connector (DB-25) and 2. A 9-pin D-type connector (DB-9).

NRZ-L(Non Return to Zero- Level)is a protocol used by EIA-232 interfaces of a PC and it is used to connect the PC devices such as external modem or serial printer.
Typically -5 volts represent binary 1 and +5 represents binary 0.
