A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a network hardware device that modulates one or more carrier wave signals to encode digital information for transmission and demodulates signals to decode the transmitted information.

Printer, in a network, will only be an additional facility for connecting various systems to a common printer. It does not facilitate or supports any important functionality of the network. A network can work successfully without a printer.
