Media access control address (MAC address) : is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications at the data link layer of a network segment. It is used as a network address for most IEEE 802 network technologies, including Ethernet and WiFi.

It is the method of determining which device has access to the transmission medium.

Media access control (MAC) data communication protocol is a SUBLAYER of the data link layer, which itself is layer 2. The MAC sublayer provides addressing and channel access control mechanisms that make it possible for several terminals or network nodes to communicate within a multiple access network that incorporates a shared medium, e.g. Ethernet. The hardware that implements the MAC is referred to as a medium access controller.
