A teleprinter is an electromechanical device that sends and receives typed messages through various communication channels. It consists of a keyboard transmitter that converts a typed message into coded pulses for transmission along a wire or cable, and a printing receiver that converts incoming signals and prints out the message. Teleprinters can use telephone cables or radio relay systems. They were first used commercially in the 1920s and became the most common telegraphic instruments. Teleprinters are also known as teletypes or teletypewriters.
