Synchronous serial transmission:

1. Initially one or two synchronization characters are sent. (synchronization characters are sent for ensuring the beginning of block of data).

2. Data characters are then continuously sent without any extra bits.

3. At the end, some error detection data are sent. Clock recovery circuit will be required so that synchronization is possible.

Advantage:

Much less overhead (less than 0.01%).

No overhead is incurred except for synchronization characters.
