What protocol(s) is(are) allowed a user to retrieve her/his mail from the mail server to her/his mail reader?

POP3 downloads all mail from the server from the inbox and stores it on your computer. The emails are removed from the server and only stored locally in your mail client program. Emails are available when you're not connected to the internet.

You just set it while configuring your server, you have to choose This POP3 if you want to receive your E-mails and remove them from your mail server.
And what best is to use IMAP. Here you receive your e-mails, and after reading them they are still stored on your mail server for later access at any time.
