In serial communication, 1 bit is transferred at a time. While in parallel, 8bits are being transferred at the same amount of time 1 bit is being transferred using serial device. Therefore, parallel transmission is faster than serial.

In a serial communication it uses one cable and we use when the distance is long, but parallel communication it uses many cables. So it is very expensive we use when the distance is short.
