You have a system that periodically locks up. You have ruled out software, and now suspect that it is hardware. What should you do first that could help you narrow it down to the component at fault?

Replacing the CPU, RAM, or level 2 cache SIMM would be stupid because why would you do that if you don't know if they are the problem? Rotating the RAM might be a possible solution, but in order to do that you have to open up the computer. So, disabling the CPU cache (BIOS) is the most sensible first step. So, that's why the 4th answer is right. Also remember the rules of trouble shooting, suspect software before hardware.
