EBCIDIC uses 8-bit binary and hence,
2 power 8 = 256.

EBCDIC Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code is a binary code for alphabetic and numeric characters that IBM developed for its larger operating systems.
EBCDIC can accommodate up to 28 characters for a total of 256 while the 27 of ASCII has a maximum of 128 characters.
