For rapid sand filter :
The maximum loss of head = 2 to 5 m.
So maximum loss = 5m.
Spacing of laterals = 15 to 30 cm c/c.
Maximum spacing is 30 cm.

For slow sand 15cm to 75 cm.

For rapid sand 2m to 4m.

Slow sand filter:

Loss of head: 0.1 m ( initial limit).
: 0.8 to 1.2 m ( final limit).

Rapid sand filter :
Loss of head: 0.3 m ( initial limit).
: 2.5 to 3.0 m (final limit).

The permissible negative head loss of a rapid sand filter is 0.8-1.2m.

When the permissible limits are reached, the filter run is terminated and the filter is back washed.

Actually, it's 3 to 3.5 m and 150 to 750 mm for slow sand filter.
