Blue baby syndrome can also be caused by nitrates in drinking water leading to methemoglobinemia. Nitrates from polluted drinking water form compounds in the body that change haemoglobin to methemoglobin, decreasing the ability of blood to carry oxygen.

Blue baby may occur due to the mixing of oxygenated and unoxygenated blood throughout the body or by contamination of groundwater by nitrates which may be added by fertilisers, Etc. Nitrates decreases oxygen carrying capacity of haemoglobin which leads to death.

So answer c is correct.

Answer is B.

Nitrates represents the complete decomposition of nitrogen compounds and so is not harmful.
