42.
The coefficients of permeability of soils of an unconfined aquifer and another confined aquifer were determined by pumping water from the wells and observing the effect of water table in two test wells at equal distances was found to be equal. The total height of confined aquifer H is given by
H = h2 - h1
H = h1 - h2
H = h2 + h1
(h1 + h2)

Equate formulas for permeability of unconfined and confined aquifers respectively and you will get d as answer

2.303 Q log(r2/r1)/√(h2^2-h1^2) == 2.303 Q log (r2/r1)/2√H (h2-h1).

Using h2^2 --h1^2 = (h2-h1) (h2+h1) in the above eqn we get option D as the correct answer.

Though the value of permeability is same, Drainage path for confined auqifer will be halved due to impermeable strata on one side.
