Civil Engineering - UPSC Civil Service Exam Questions - Discussion
Discussion Forum : UPSC Civil Service Exam Questions - Section 1 (Q.No. 35)
35.
Consider the following statements :
1. An ascending gradient of 1 in 100 meets an ascending gradient of 1 in 120 to form a Valley curve.
2. A falling gradient of 1 in 25 meets a falling gradient of 1 in 50 to form a summit curve.
3. The length of summit curve is determined on the basis of head light sight distance.
Which one of the statements given above is/are correct ?

Options is 1 and 2 means A) is correct because when to ascending grade meet if G1>G2 then valleys curve form and if G2>G1 then summit curve form likewise if descending grade meets with another descending grade if G1>G2 valley curve but G2>G1 summit curve form.
So both 1 and 2 are correct but 3 is wrong.
So both 1 and 2 are correct but 3 is wrong.

@All.
Here, All options are wrong.
1. Ascending gradient (1/100) is more than ascending gradient (1/20) which will form valley.
2. Falling gradient (1/25) is more than the falling gradient (1/50) again will form a valley.
3. In the valley, we consider HSD while in the summit we consider SSD and OSD.

Headlight sight dist is considered in valley curve. So only 2 is right. i.e. option D.

Option D is correct.

All the statement are wrong, valley curve is formed when descending meet ascending gradient. , And vice versa for summit curve. And headlight sight distance is criteria for determining valley or sag curve.

Headlight sight distance is criteria for valley curve.
So, statement 2 is wrong.
So, statement 2 is wrong.

I think Option D is correct.

Second statement is false right? since those two gradients form a valley curve.
