A gradually applied load W is suspended by with ropes AB and CD as shown in the figure. The wires AB and CD, made of the same material and of the same cross-section are connected to a rigid block from which the load W is suspended in such a way that both the ropes stretch by the same amount. If the stress in AB and CD are p1 and p2 respectively, then the ratio - will be

No answer is C, I think so.
Because stress = p/A.
Ratio of P1/p2= (stress*4*4)/(stress*6*6).
Here given question is same material and cross section. So assume rectangular block.
So, the answer is 4/9.

πL1=FL/AY
Now according to question πL1=πL2 ,Y1=Y2, A1=A2
hence p1L1=p2L2.
P1/p2=L2/L1=6/4=3/2.

@All.
Use compatibility eqn;.
Elongation1 = elongation2.

Stress= load/ area.
Stress=p1/4=p2/6.
P1/p2=4/6=2/3.
Stress=p1/4=p2/6.
P1/p2=4/6=2/3.

P1*L1/E = P2*L2/E.
P1/P2 = L2/L1.
P1/P2 = 3/2.
P1/P2 = L2/L1.
P1/P2 = 3/2.
