M is a moment in simply supported beam by point load at mid-span having length L,
Then, M=PL/4.

For a simply supported beam with load at mid-span having length L .
Then Moment at the centre is (P/2*L/2)= PL/4.
Then Moment at the centre is (P/2*L/2)= PL/4.
