Contour lines are horizontal. Slope angle I think >0 to 90 degree.

So steepest slope should be 90°. So, the right angles to contour.

Just consider one point on one contour line and 2, 3 points on the consecutive contour line. The perpendicular line will be the steepest. Work pot and check on paper.
