In riveted/bolted joints,
Pitch = center-to-center distance of consecutive rivets along the direction of stress.
Gauge = perpendicular distance between two consecutive gauge lines.
Staggered pitch = the diagonal distance between two consecutive rivets in adjacent gauge lines.
So the correct answer is: Diagonally.

Parallel to the direction of the loading pitch.
Perpendicular to the direction of the loading gauge.
Parallel to the direction of loading diagonally in zigzag or diamond riveting called staggered pitch.
