@All.

When equal and opposite forces applied to a body, tend to elongate it, the stress so produced.

My first question is, as equal and opposite force is applied then how it can be possible to elongate the body?

It should be compressed/squizzed.
So, the stress produced must be "compressive stress".

Nature of Stress will be opposite as that of nature of applied force UPTO DEFORMATION. Once a body gets deformed, the nature of stress will be the same as that of force. Here tends to elongate means it has been deformed. That's why it's a tensile period.

@Deepankar.

Your explanation is correct but here as it is elongating that means stress produced will be opposite i.e. Compressive stress will be produced.

I think the answer is compressive stress because the force applied is tensile and stress is internal resistance which oppose the applied force.

Elongation means force is tensile. Stress always opposes the force thats why compressive stress.

The answer is correct. The Elongation is not possible in compressive forces.

As the force applied is elongating the body then stress will be compressive.

Yes, I agreed that option C is wrong, it should be compressive stress.

Stress produced will be tensile.
Stress-induced will be compressive.

Tensile stress is correct answer. I agree with it.
