Column reinforcement should be embeded Ld times inside the footing slab from the exterior edge of the column.

It is Leg distance of column reinforcement (vertical) which is extend 48 diameter to the footing from the outer edge of the column. Like shape of column vertical L. It is distance bottom part of L.

Let's take an Isolated footing with the column on its top. Now provide reinforcement in it and extend it into footing up to 48d from the outer edge of the column. Hope this gonna help you guys.
