So the height of bank from the top of the canal is d2-d1.
Again, fiilng slope is r2:1 so horizontal length = (d2-d1)*r2.
And cutting slope is r1:1, horizontal length= d1*r1.
So, horizontal distance between bed and bank x= (d2-d1)*r2+d1*r1=r2d2.

D2 is the depth from bank to bed level which is the same for both sides.
So, r2*d2 gives the horizontal distance between the bed and the bank directly.
