The steam function is a function of space and time such that its partial derivative w.r.t any direction gives the velocity component at right angles to this direction.
Some properties of stream function:
1. On any streamline, the steam function is constant.
2. If the flow is continuous, the flow around any path in the fluid is zero.
3. The rate of change of a steam function with distance in arbitrary direction is proportional to the component of velocity normal to the direction.

The flow velocity components can be expressed as the derivatives of the scalar stream function. The stream function can be used to plot streamlines, which represent the trajectories of particles in a steady flow. The two-dimensional Lagrange stream function was introduced by Joseph Louis Lagrange in 1781.
