The pressure is termed as the active earth pressure since the weight of the backfill is responsible for the movement of the wall. If the wall is smooth, the resultant pressure acts normal to the face of the wall.

Active means work is done. In this case, work is done by earth ie it is pushing the wall out and not vice versa. Hence word active.

In dams, the face of the wall acts as a pressure.
