As per IS 800, the permissible stress in axial compression and tensions is 0.60fy.
FOS = yield stress/permissible stress.
FOS =fy/0.60fy = 1.67.

Permissible stress by 1984 is 0.6fy.
And we know that FOS=fy/PS=fy/0.6fy=1.6666666667.
