Drying oils are a key component of oil paint and some varnishes. Some commonly used drying oils include linseed oil, tung oil, poppy seed oil, perilla oil, and walnut oil. Their use has declined over the past several decades, as they have been replaced by alkyd resins and other binders.

Linseed oil is the most commonly used drying oil in oil paints. It absorbs oxygen from the air and forms a hard, transparent film upon drying.

Olive oil → non-drying oil (does not form a hard film).
Kerosene oil → not an oil, used as a solvent/fuel.
Acetate of lead → a chemical compound, not an oil.

Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. Commonly used drying oils include linseed oil, poppy seed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. The choice of oil imparts a range of properties to the oil paint, such as the amount of yellowing or drying time.
