If a small portion of soil having area less than 1/3 of column spacing is loose/soft, then it can be covered by providing Raft Foundation. However if the loosen part is more than 1/3 of Column Spacing then you should go for deep Foundation/Piling.

Loose pocket of soil is bridged safely by raft foundation when it is less than 1/3 of column spacing. If loose pocket mass is larger than 1/3 of column spacing, it will affect the foundation.

If the area of footing is equals or more than the half area of foundation then raft foundation preferred.
