Auger boring is not suitable for greater depth or soil having gravel, boulder or compact soil. In this boring auger having screws are driven into soil by rotation accompanied by top pressing. After every second of penetration the auger is taken out and soil is collected for the examination.

Augers are used in cohesive and other soft soils above the water table. They may either be operated manually or mechanically.

Hand Augers are used up to a depth of 6m.

Mechanically, operated augers are used for greater depth and they can also be used in grave soil.
